The Lérins Islands

Guide to the Lérins Islands from Cannes: Sainte-Marguerite, Saint-Honorat, Man in the Iron Mask, underwater eco-museum, abbey and monks' wines.

An archipelago
outside of time

In the turquoise waters of the Bay of Cannes, just 15 minutes by boat from the Old Port, the two Lérins Islands combine pristine nature, millennial spirituality, exceptional heritage and precious vineyards.

Île Sainte-Marguerite turquoise waters

Île Sainte-Marguerite

Covered in eucalyptus forests and pine trees, the island's coastal paths lead to coves with exceptional turquoise water, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

At its heart stands the Fort Royal, listed historic monument, famous for imprisoning the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask. The museum dedicated to this enigmatic story is a must.

Off the south shore, the underwater eco-museum by Jason deCaires Taylor features six submerged sculptures accessible with just a snorkel.

  • 🏰 Fort Royal (17th c.) — Historic monument
  • 🎭 Man in the Iron Mask Museum
  • 🤿 Underwater eco-museum (unique in France)
  • 🌊 Turquoise coves & beaches
  • 🌿 Nature trails in eucalyptus forest

Île Saint-Honorat

The Lérins Abbey, listed historic monument since 1840, is still home to 21 Cistercian monks who have perpetuated a winemaking tradition going back to the Middle Ages.

The monks produce exceptional wines — red, white and rosé — as well as aromatic liqueurs. The abbey shop is the only place in the world to buy these unique wines.

  • ⛪ Cistercian abbey founded in 410 AD
  • 🍷 Monks' wines (sold at abbey shop)
  • 🌿 Meditation & nature trails
  • 🏰 Fortified medieval tower (11th c.)
  • 🌊 Wild beaches accessible on foot
💡 Our recommendation: If you can only visit one, choose Sainte-Marguerite for its variety of activities. If you have a full day, visit both — they are wonderfully complementary!
